A professional compressed air energy audit answers one question with measurements instead of opinions: where does your compressed air energy go, and what would fixing it be worth?

Done well, it's often the highest-leverage money a plant spends on its air system. Done badly, it's a sales visit with a clipboard.

When a professional audit makes sense

  • Your compressed air electricity spend is large enough that 20–30% of it justifies professional fees — as a rough guide, that's most plants above ~75 kW of installed compressor power.
  • You have multiple compressors and don't know which combination actually runs.
  • You're about to make an equipment decision (replacement, expansion, VSD) and want the demand side measured before sizing anything.
  • Compliance or certification requires documented measurement (energy management systems, subsidy programs).

If none of that applies, start with the DIY system assessment instead — a day of your own time with tools you already own finds the big items in most smaller systems.

What a good audit actually includes

The difference between a real audit and a walkthrough is logged measurement over time — a snapshot of a compressed air system tells you almost nothing, because demand changes by shift, by day and by season. Expect:

  • A week or more of data logging: compressor power (or amps), pressures at several points, and ideally flow. This is where the truth about load profiles, unload running and weekend/night consumption lives.
  • A leak survey with an ultrasonic detector, with leaks tagged, located and quantified.
  • A pressure profile across the system — compressor room vs. points of use — exposing pressure drop and artificial demand.
  • A control-strategy review: how the compressors share the load, how much time is spent unloaded, what the pressure band looks like. With multiple compressors this is routinely where the biggest single finding is.
  • A report with numbers you can act on: each measure with its estimated savings, cost, and payback — not a generic checklist.

The international standard for compressed air energy assessments, ISO 11011, describes this scope well; asking an auditor whether they work to it is a useful filter.

What it costs

Honestly: it varies with plant size, scope and region — from around a thousand for a small single-compressor site to five figures for large multi-compressor systems with full flow measurement. Two things keep the economics sane:

  • The typical audit of an unoptimized system finds savings worth several times its own fee, with many measures paying back inside a year.
  • Some utilities and governments subsidize compressed air audits. Ask before you commission one — it's free money.

Choosing an auditor

The one thing that matters most: is the audit the product, or is it the funnel for selling you hardware?

  • An auditor who sells compressors will find reasons to sell you compressors. That doesn't make them dishonest — it makes them a salesperson with a logger. Prefer independent auditors, or at minimum separate the audit contract from any equipment purchase.
  • Ask what they measure and for how long. "We'll walk the plant and have a look" is not an audit.
  • Ask for a sample report. If it's a brochure with percentages, pass. If it's measurements, findings and payback numbers, good.
  • References from plants like yours — same rough size, same shift pattern — beat certificates.

Getting your money's worth

An audit report that sits in a drawer saves exactly nothing. Three habits fix that:

  1. Secure the budget for implementing the quick wins before the audit, so findings can turn into work orders immediately.
  2. Walk along during the audit. You'll learn more about your own system in two days than in years of normal operation.
  3. Re-measure after implementation. Savings that were measured once can quietly erode — leak rates grow back, setpoints creep up, and the next audit starts from scratch.
