Sullair ES-6 compressor

Guest June 11, 2015 1 Answer
Question
I have operated a Sullair rotary screw air compressor (ES-6 series) for over three years (the compressor is likely 6 years old). Last week the compressor shut down with a motor overload alarm. Checking the amperage, it is briefly running at an amperage almost three times what it should be running. I'm at a loss as to why the amperage is up on the compressor.

When does this occur? During normal loaded running? Or when switching from unloaded to loaded? Please try rotating the motor/screw element by hand. Do you feel any 'high points'? It should run smooth all way round. If screw runs smooth, then I think it should be ok. Next, check the motor isolation with a 'megger' or 'mega-ohm meter'. It is a multimeter which works at high voltage (around 1000 volts) to measure the resistance of the motor isolation. It should be in the mega-ohms. Good luck and love to hear how this works out! Cas
