craftsman air compressor

Hi cas Awesome website. Very helpful. I have a question about my craftsman air compressor. Tank is filling up very slowly. Inlet plates are clean and not worn. Muffler is fine. My question is should the piston have a tight fit in the chamber. As in should there be any space between the piston cylinder and the piston washer Thanks Todd
