consumption of 55 kW oil injected compressor
Question
We have 55 kW Oil injected compressor and it is consuming a current of 110 Amp when run at full load . is it normal ? A technician told me that motor is consuming this current because it is belt driven instead of gear driven . firstly, i want to ask that is this factor considered for current consumption ? secondly, what are the other factors are necessary to consider if the current is rising except separator issues?

Hi,
This is perfectly normal. Use this general formula to convert kW to Amps.
I(A) = 1000 × P(kW) / (√3 × PF × V (V) )
I assume you use 380V 3-phase power, and 0.8 as power factor. Which gives:
I(A) = 1000 × 65(kW) / (√3 × 0.8 × 380 ) = 105 A
A typical 55 kW compressor can actually have an input power of about 65 kW (for cooling fan, dryer if fitted, etc), which would require almost 125 A.
The fact that it's gear or belt driven doesn't change this.
Factors that can raise current draw:
- Higher pressure gives higher current
- Dirty seperator
- Dirty inlet filters
- Mechanical problems like element failure, bearings going bad, etc.

My 55kw Ingersoll Rand shuts down after running briefly with the indication Main MTS filled. But the water was drained completely yet it keeps shuting down after working briefly but starts everytime it's switched on. What could be the cause and how to solve it.
