Atlas Copco ZR400 - low pressure element temperature too high
Question
Recently i have replaced the LP element (a brand new one) of an Atlas Copco ZR400 air compressor as the discharge pressure had gone above the trip setting of 230deg C.
We monitored the operating condition of the new LP element and notice there is little change after the replacement with the LP element discharge temperature at 230 degC.
May I know what could be the main reason for causing this problem? Thanks & best regards,

Thank you for your question. There could be a few reasons for the high discharge temperature of the low pressure compressor element.
You see, on these oil free rotary screw compressors (click for our page on oil free screw compressors), everything works in a balance with each other. If one thing is disturbed, the balance will be gone and you will see high temperatures or shutdowns.
The low pressure elements compresses the air to the intermediate pressure, the air gets cooled and the high pressure elements compresses it further to the end pressure.
It's important to know the intercooler pressure. Can you tell me what it is? Is should be around 2.3 bar.
Your high temperature of the LP element could be due to:
- Not enough or too warm cooling water or blocked channels.
- Dirty intercooler.
- Too high intercooler pressure, because something is wrong with the High Pressure element.
A too high intercooler pressure results in a too high compression ratio of the low pressure element, which results in a too high temperature.
