Kaeser AS30 will not load

  • Question Title: Kaeser AS30 will not load

I have a kaeser screw compressor model AS30 made in germany in 1986, which have a capcity of 2.6 m3/min @ 10 bars, the compressor is broken now due to a problem that i cant figure it out!!!

The problem is that when the compressor starts, it starts for a while without being loaded (the motor and fan runs but no compressed air produced), and thats normal.

Then the compressor should load by opening the small jack (loading valve) to allow air suction through air filter, the problem is it doesn't do that automatically, you should push the jack manually by hand to start sucking air and producing compressed air.

So what is the problem ???

Thanks for help in advance

Hi Khalil,

You are right, the loading/inlet valve is not working. It should open when you press the 'load' button'.

The problem could be either in the loading valve itself, or in the control air to the loading valve.

The loading valve is opened and closed by control compressed air. This control air is in turn controlled electrically by a so-called solenoid valve. The solenoid valve will open when power is supplied to it, and will close when removed (it works by an electrical magnet/coil).

Many times, these solenoids become dirty, or the coil (magnet) burns through. You can check it's operation by disconnecting the connection to the inlet valve and see if compressed air is coming out or not. Press load/unload several times to see if the solenoid is successfully opening and closing the control air to the inlet valve.

If this is not working, than clean or replace the solenoid.

If this is OK, then the problem is with your inlet/loading valve.

You can get an overhaul kit from Kaeaser (with new gaskets, o-rings, etc), or you can just try to clean it.

Be careful when opening up inlet valves. Some models have a VERY strong, compressed, spring inside (these models usually have long bolts installed in the cover, to slowly un-compress the spring).

Also be sure to read my air compressor inlet valve page.

Hope this was enough help. If you need more help, just let me know.

Good luck

Cas.

Hi, first of all you should go systematically step by step, of course solenoid valve can be problem. AS 30 has old version of inlet valve (butterfly valve) actuating by air cylinder. I can advice 1st step, when compressor runs on idling and no compressed air is produced, shut off venting valve on oil separator tank to increase internal pressure up to 5-6 bar, if unit starts produce air, problem is in venting valve usually diaphragm. or actuating cylinder is worn out and has to be replaced. When doesn't help, check electric power on solenoid valve, if voltage is missing, pressure switch should be checked, if no voltage is present, go to auxiliary contactor or only contact on delta contactor, depending on type of electric diagram (older/newer). Whenever you do anything on compressors, remember, be on save side electric as well as mechanical parts heavy loaded springs, before you dismantle any valve, you should know, how it looks inside and what is operating principle. Good luck Charlie
